A Viridian in-frame kitchen, tiled wall to ceiling

The finished room
The brief
A long room with a single run of units down one wall and space for an L at the far end, kept as a working kitchen rather than opened out into the rest of the house. Two things shaped the design. The colour had to be dark without closing a narrow space in, and the tiling was to be treated as a feature wall in its own right rather than a splashback tucked behind the worktop.
What we did
- Fitted Winslow in-frame effect doors in Viridian by Uform, on Natural Kendal Oak carcasses, with oak end panels and an oak-lined open recess above the extractor to break up the run of green
- Templated and fitted 30mm Milano quartz by Stone World, carried along the window wall and up behind the hob as a matching upstand
- Set a true quartz sink under the worktop, so the stone runs unbroken to the bowl, and fitted the Abode Globe tap in chrome
- Installed the Neff appliances: integrated oven, induction hob and chimney extractor
- Tiled the wall from worktop to ceiling in Lumier Taco Blue 16.5 x 16.5cm, and laid Garner Matt White 1200 x 600 porcelain throughout
- Ran warm strip lighting under the wall units and along the plinths, which is what keeps the dark end of the room working after dark
- Fitted out the downstairs cloakroom in the same visit, so the customer had one team and one timescale for both rooms
The result
The tiling does the work here. A patterned blue and grey wall carried right up to the ceiling gives the room something to look at from every angle, and the pale quartz and large-format white floor hold enough light that the Viridian reads as depth rather than darkness. The chrome strap handles and the black vertical radiator pick up the cooler tones in the tile; the oak carcasses and end panels warm the whole thing back up.
