If you have young children, or are planning to, you might consider designing a family kitchen, when thinking about your new or renovated kitchen space. The kitchen is the hub of the home. And whether you have a small, square kitchen, a long, galley kitchen, or a large open plan space, it’s worth considering the youngsters when planning. Designing a family kitchen

So, what can you do to make sure your kitchen is perfect for the whole family? Well, there are several things you can do, including:

  • Rounding the edges of counter-tops- children are often head height to the counter-top, and square edges with sharp corners can be a real danger. Rounding these instead, can help to keep your household safe and happy.
  • Lowering counter-tops- cooking and baking with your children is a great way to keep them entertained, and to teach them a lot of new things. If you consider lowering a section of your worktop, you could have a permanent kitchen assistant. And you wont need to balance your child on a chair or anything dangerous either.
  • Choose a matte finish- glossy kitchen cabinets might look great, but they do make handprints and fingerprints very visible. And with small children, with sticky fingers, this can mean you’re cabinets will look dirty. A matte finish kitchen will help you avoid this issue.
  • Hygienic worktops- for young children in particular, hygiene is very important. Some worktops are more hygienic than others, with corian and solid surfaces being the most sanitary, and quartz not far behind. This is because these are materials designed to have no gaps, or holes, so food and debris cannot gather on the surface, causing bacteria to breed.
