Guide to kitchen layouts

Here at Homematas in Preston, we are kitchen design professionals. From traditional or classic kitchens, to contemporary, modern and airy kitchens, we have a huge range to suit any style or theme. We also know how important it is to get the layout of your new kitchen just right. As a result, we have produced this guide to kitchen layouts.

The Golden Triangle and your kitchen layout

One of the most important aspects of your kitchen design is the golden triangle. This is the triangle that will be created between the sink, the oven, and the fridge. These are the three key features of any kitchen, and the space between the three of these should be unobstructed. This is for practical reasons, as these three points are often walked between several times a day, and any object in the way of this path, is likely to cause a problem.

Kitchen layout designs

Once you know that the golden triangle needs to be kept clear and free, you can begin to look at different kitchen layout designs. There are a range of layouts to choose from, and these will be better suited to some kitchens rather than others, depending on the size and shape of the kitchen itself.

Layout choices include:

#1 The Horseshoe Kitchen Layout

This is a layout that is perfect for small or large square kitchens. In a horseshoe layout, the cabinets line three of the four walls, and this means that everything is easily accessible from the center of the kitchen. It also means that your golden triangle will be free to walk between.

#2 The Galley Kitchen Layout

Similar in design to the horseshoe layout, the only difference is the shape of the kitchen itself. A galley kitchen is usually long and narrow in a rectangular shape, as opposed to the square of a horseshoe kitchen. Again, everything is easily accessible in a galley kitchen, although it typically feels smaller and more more enclosed because of the nature of the rooms shape.

#3 The L Shaped Kitchen

Finally, the L shaped kitchen is the perfect kitchen layout design for larger kitchens. In the L shaped kitchen, cabinets run around the edge of two walls, leaving the rest of the space open. This means that this type of layout is perfect for adding an island, as long as it does not obstruct the golden triangle.
