Choosing kitchen worktops

When it comes to your kitchen worktop, there are a lot of things to consider. After all, you need something that will be both practical, and stylish, while fitting in with the rest of your kitchen theme. In fact, choosing kitchen worktops can be one of the most important kitchen decisions. Here at Homematas, we are Preston’s leading kitchen design specialists. As a result, we have produced this guide to choosing kitchen worktops.

Choosing kitchen worktops

The principle considerations of any new kitchen worktop should be:

  • how durable is it?
  • does it need maintaining?
  • will it fit with my colour scheme?

With these questions in mind, let’s look at three of the top kitchen worktop options.

Laminate worktops

Laminate worktops are a good option for a lot of kitchens. Not only are they available in a range of colours, but they can also be made to look like other worktop materials, including composite worktops and natural stone or timber worktops, while being more affordable.
In addition, laminate worktops are also very durable, and resistant to impact. The design of a laminate worktop is such that it is naturally non-porous, which means that it is perfect for kitchens where spills and water are commonplace.

Composite worktops

Made from around 90% natural quartz, mixed with binders, a composite worktop is stylish and attractive. They are sometimes referred to as ‘quartz composite’ or ‘engineered stone’ worktops.
Composite worktops are created in such a way that the surface colour and composition are even and consistent. This makes for a stylish finish that can suit a range of kitchens styles, from the most traditional, to the contemporary.
In addition, composite kitchens are incredibly practical and hard-wearing.

Hardwood worktops

Suited to a full range of kitchens, from rustic to contemporary, hard wood can be a great option. It is strong and durable, and can last an incredibly long time if it is well maintained. In a variety of shades, hardwood can suit both light and dark kitchen styles, and adds warmth and character to any kitchen. However, it will need to be treated and sealed to make it waterproof, and regular maintenance will be necessary.
